Noon Sakinah and Tanween Rules: Izhar, Idgham, Iqlab and Ikhfa with Examples

Ask any Tajweed teacher which rules students meet first, and you will hear the same answer. Noon Sakinah and Tanween. They show up on almost every line of the Quran. Get them right, and your recitation starts to sound the way you hear it from the great reciters. Get them wrong, and even Surah Al-Fatiha can feel a little off.

We teach these four rules every single week, to kids in Texas, reverts in Manchester and busy parents in Johannesburg. Here is how we explain them in class, step by step.

What Is Noon Sakinah, and How Is Tanween Different?

  • Noon Sakinah is a noon with no vowel on it: نْ. You find it inside words and at the end of words.
  • Tanween is a double vowel at the end of a noun: ـًـ ـٍـ ـٌـ. You write it as a vowel, but you say an extra “n” sound.

So tanween is really a hidden noon sakinah. That is why both follow the exact same four rules. The only thing that decides the rule is the letter that comes right after.

Which Letter Tells You Which Rule to Use?

Look at the next letter. Then use this table.

RuleLetters that trigger itHow manyWhat happens
Izharء ه ع ح غ خ6Say the noon clearly
Idghamي ر م ل و ن6Merge the noon into the next letter
Iqlabب1Change the noon to a meem sound
IkhfaAll the other letters15Hide the noon with a soft nasal sound

That covers all 28 letters. Learn this one table, and you already know where every rule lives.

When Should You Say the Noon Clearly? Izhar for Beginners

Izhar means “to make clear.” When noon sakinah or tanween meets one of the six throat letters, you say the noon cleanly, with no ghunnah.

ExampleSounds likeThroat letter
مَنْ آمَنَman aamanaHamzah ء
مِنْهُمْmin-humHa ه
أَنْعَمْتَan’amtaAyn ع
عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ‘aleemun hakeemHa ح

Why no ghunnah? The throat letters sit far back in the mouth. The noon sits at the tip of the tongue. They are far apart, so there is nothing to blend.

How Does Idgham Merge the Noon into the Next Letter?

Idgham means “to merge.” The noon disappears into the next letter, as if it were never there. Many students remember the six letters with the word يَرْمَلُونَ (yarmaloon).

Which Idgham Letters Have Ghunnah and Which Do Not?

TypeLettersExample
With ghunnah (hum)ي ن م ومَنْ يَقُولُ sounds like may-yaqoolu
Without ghunnahل رمِنْ رَبِّهِمْ sounds like mir-rabbihim

Ghunnah is the soft hum from your nose. In Tajweed, we hold it for 2 counts. Try it: pinch your nose and hum. If the sound stops, you were doing it right.

Why Do Words Like Dunya Break the Idgham Rule?

Here is a detail many websites skip. Idgham only happens between two separate words. Inside one word, you read the noon clearly. There are four such words in the Quran: الدُّنْيَا, بُنْيَانٌ, قِنْوَانٌ and صِنْوَانٌ. Merge the noon in these, and the meaning gets blurry. Scholars call this Izhar Mutlaq.

What Happens When Noon Meets Ba? Iqlab Made Simple

Iqlab means “to turn.” When noon sakinah or tanween comes before ب, the noon turns into a meem sound with a 2-count ghunnah.

  • مِنْ بَعْدِ sounds like mim-ba’di
  • سَمِيعٌ بَصِيرٌ sounds like samee’um-baseer

Fun fact: your mouth already does this in English. Say “sunbeam” fast. Feel your lips close early? That is almost Iqlab. Just keep the lips lightly together. Do not press them hard.

How Do You Hide the Noon Correctly in Ikhfa?

Ikhfa means “to hide.” This one takes the most practice. The noon is not fully clear, and not fully merged. It sits in between.

  • Move your tongue toward the next letter early.
  • Do not let the tip of your tongue touch the top of your mouth for a full noon.
  • Ghunnah through your nose for 2 counts, then say the next letter.

Examples: أَنتُمْ (antum), مِن قَبْلُ (min qablu), مَن ذَا (man dha). Listen closely and you will notice the ghunnah sounds a bit heavier before letters like ق and lighter before ت. That is the tongue getting ready.

How Can You Spot Each Rule in the Mushaf Before You Recite?

The common Madani Mushaf gives you quiet hints. Once you see them, you cannot unsee them.

RuleWhat the Mushaf shows
IzharSukoon on the noon, and tanween marks stacked on top of each other
IdghamNo sukoon on the noon, tanween marks offset, and usually a shaddah on the next letter
IqlabA small meem above or below the noon or tanween
IkhfaNo sukoon on the noon, tanween marks offset, and no shaddah on the next letter

What Mistakes Do Students Make Most, and How Do We Fix Them?

After years of live classes, we see the same slips again and again.

  • Ghunnah during Izhar. The fix: stop the sound right after the noon.
  • Saying a full “n” in Ikhfa. English speakers do this a lot. The fix: keep the tongue tip off the roof of your mouth.
  • Pressing the lips hard in Iqlab. The fix: think “soft touch,” not “seal.”
  • Merging inside one word, like dunya. The fix: remember the four-word exception.

Reading about rules helps. But your ear cannot always catch your own mistakes. That is the honest truth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Noon Sakinah and Tanween

What are the four rules of Noon Sakinah and Tanween?

The four rules are Izhar (say the noon clearly), Idgham (merge it into the next letter), Iqlab (turn it into a meem sound) and Ikhfa (hide it with a soft nasal sound). The letter that comes right after the noon sakinah or tanween decides which rule applies.

What is the difference between Noon Sakinah and Tanween?

Noon sakinah is a noon with no vowel on it, and it can appear inside or at the end of a word. Tanween is a double vowel at the end of a noun, and you pronounce it with an extra “n” sound. Both follow the same four rules.

How many letters trigger each rule?

Izhar has 6 letters, Idgham has 6, Iqlab has 1 (the letter ba), and Ikhfa has the remaining 15. Together they cover all 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet.

How long should I hold ghunnah?

Hold ghunnah for 2 counts. This applies to Idgham with ghunnah, Iqlab and Ikhfa. There is no ghunnah in Izhar, and none in Idgham without ghunnah (the letters lam and ra).

Why is there no Idgham in words like Dunya?

Idgham happens only between two separate words. Four words in the Quran have a noon sakinah followed by an Idgham letter inside the same word: Dunya, Bunyan, Qinwan and Sinwan. You read the noon clearly in them, which is called Izhar Mutlaq.

How do I recognize each rule in the Mushaf?

Look at the marks on the noon or tanween. Izhar shows a sukoon on the noon, or stacked tanween marks. Idgham and Ikhfa show no sukoon, with offset tanween marks, and Idgham usually has a shaddah on the next letter. Iqlab shows a small meem.

How long does it take to learn these rules?

With steady practice, most of our students understand and apply the core rules within 3 to 6 months. Our online Tajweed rules course uses live one-on-one lessons on Zoom, and your teacher corrects you on the spot.
